Industry benchmark estimates: North America ~$2.45/kg, Northeast Asia ~$2.30/kg, Europe ~$2.69/kg. If you're importing brake hoses, you already felt that pulse quicken. The obvious question: should your hose costs drop too?
The answer is more interesting than yes or no. And the real conversation starts where most buyers stop asking.
Let's look at the actual cost breakdown.
Based on typical manufacturing cost analysis — and I should note, these numbers vary by factory and region, but the proportions hold — here's how a brake hose dollar breaks down:

Most suppliers won't show you this breakdown. That's why you need to see it.
While EPDM softened, the rest of the world kept moving — mostly in the wrong direction.
DOT FMVSS 106 certification testing has fixed per-batch costs that don't track commodities. Skilled labor wages in manufacturing hubs have been rising. And container shipping rates from China to the US East Coast hit $7,880/FEU in June — up 62%, according to Freightos data reported by the Financial Times.
These costs are mostly decoupled from rubber prices. Your supplier is paying more for things that have nothing to do with the raw material index. And if you're only watching EPDM, you're missing half the picture.
Smart buyers ask different questions. Here are the three I've found most useful after twelve years in this business — and most suppliers won't volunteer the answers.
First, how many reinforcement layers does your formula use? A single-layer hose and a two-layer hose can look identical on the outside. They're not the same product.
Second, what percentage of recycled rubber is in the compound, if any? This is where some suppliers quietly absorb the EPDM drop. The spec sheet says "EPDM" — it doesn't say how much.
Third, can you show me a third-party burst test report from the last 3 months? A price list tells you what someone wants to charge. A test report tells you what the hose can actually handle.
Start with the EPDM index. It's a fair opener — the data is public, the drop is real. But then pivot. Ask about the other levers:
The goal is to find out whether the price you're being quoted reflects the actual cost structure of a well-made hose — or whether there's margin hiding where there shouldn't be.
When both sides understand the math, the conversation stops being adversarial and starts being productive.
