Rubber Brake Hose: Navigating the New PFAS Chemical Bans

The Hidden Ban

You've heard the term PFAS — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. Over 10,000 synthetic chemicals. They're called "forever chemicals" because nature can't break them down. For decades, they've been used in rubber hoses as processing aids, mold-release agents, and surface treatments.


So what's changed? Well, regulators are moving.


In 2025, the EU passed REACH amendment (EU) 2025/1988, restricting PFAS in firefighting foams. The broader PFAS universal restriction proposal is now in final evaluation, targeting completion by end of 2026. The U.S. EPA has listed over 200 PFAS substances for mandatory reporting. Vietnam issued a PFAS ban on industrial seals — including rubber components — effective October 2026. China added more PFAS to its priority pollutant list.


If your rubber brake hose contains PFAS, that's a regulatory exposure you don't want.

The Sourcing Risk

If your brake hose supplier cannot provide a PFAS-Free Declaration, you're looking at shipment rejection at EU customs, fines under REACH and EPA regulations that can wipe out your margin on an entire container, product recalls that destroy brand trust overnight, and legal liability from downstream buyers who will come after you for non-compliance.


Global buyers — Tier 1 automotive suppliers, OE manufacturers, distributors — are already demanding PFAS compliance documentation. If you can't produce it, they'll move to your competitor.


Many suppliers don't even know their own material composition. They buy rubber compounds from third parties, and PFAS hides in the processing aids they never asked about. I'm not saying every supplier is hiding something. But if you haven't asked for a PFAS declaration, you're gambling.
