Every supplier says, "We use the best rubber." But when you ask for proof, silence.
I spent 12 years as a CPO at a top-tier auto parts distributor. A few months ago, I was reviewing a new supplier's technical file. Their datasheet looked perfect — until I asked for the batch-level test records. That's when things started falling apart.
Brake hose failure at highway speed doesn't care about your supplier's reputation. It cares about test numbers.
Stop accepting vague promises. Send these 3 emails. If they hesitate — walk away.
Email 1 — Pulse Test Data
"Please share your SAE J1401 impulse test report with the batch number. I need cycle count, test pressure, and fluid temperature per batch."
Why: Pulse testing is mandatory. SAE J1401 requires the hose to survive thousands of pressure cycles at elevated temperatures. No batch-level report — and I've seen this happen multiple times — usually means no testing at all.
Email 2 — Rubber Formulation
"What's your inner tube compound? EPDM or NBR blend? Send batch mixing records and MDR cure curves from your last 5 runs."
Why: Brake fluid destroys NBR. The swelling rate of NBR in DOT 3 fluid can exceed 25% within 72 hours at 100°C (SAE J1703 compatibility test data). If they use cheap NBR to save money, your hoses will swell and fail. EPDM or nothing.
Email 3 — Crimp Pull Force
"Send your crimp spec, die number, and pull-off force data from your last 3 lots. Min and average values."
Why: The crimp is the weakest link. FMVSS 106 mandates minimum pull-off forces. I'm not saying every supplier who hesitates on this is hiding a defect — some just don't have the testing equipment in-house. But if they can't produce records, you're flying blind.
