Reinforcement layer — one less braid. That woven layer is what gets the hose through the FMVSS 106 4,000 psi pressure hold test. Drop one layer, and burst pressure can fall by up to 30%, putting it below the 7,000 psi minimum.
Inner tube compound loaded with cheap filler. Instead of NBR rubber, they use extenders. The hose seals fine at first. After 18 months of brake fluid exposure, the inner surface degrades. Particles break off and clog ABS valves. The repair bill? $800 per vehicle.

Build the picture. A cheap hose at $1.90 per unit looks good on the purchase order. Add in a 1% return rate ($1,500 per 10,000 units), 2.5% warranty claims in Years 3-5 ($4,750), and a legal risk buffer that, in my audit experience, lands between $5,000 and $15,000 depending on jurisdiction. The cheap hose TCO lands around $30,000 per 10,000 units. A quality hose at $2.10? Around $21,000.
