Euro 7 (Regulation EU 2024/1257) takes effect on November 29, 2026. For the first time, brake dust has a legal limit — 7 mg/km for ICE vehicles, 3 mg/km for EVs. Type approval depends on it.
Brake hose expansion rate is where many suppliers get caught. When a hose expands unevenly under pressure, the brake pad doesn't engage smoothly. Uneven pad wear follows. More dust. And that can contribute to a failed Euro 7 test.
The connection between hose stability and particle emissions — something I didn't fully appreciate until I looked at the actual WLTP-Brake cycle test data — is now regulated. A hose that looks fine on paper can undermine your customer's compliance.
Euro 7 doesn't just measure brake dust at the pad level. It forces the entire supply chain to prove their materials don't shed microplastics under extreme wear. Your rubber hoses — the outer cover, the inner tube, every layer — will face scrutiny. Can you prove your material's micro-plastic release rate stays below acceptable thresholds after 200,000 km or 10 years?
Conventional rubber compounds wear down and release particles. Under Euro 7, those particles count. Research from China Automotive Technology and Research Center shows brake wear contributes 16% to 55% of urban non-exhaust PM10 emissions — a range wide enough that every component in the braking system matters.
The EU is already tightening microplastic regulations under REACH (EU 2023/2055). And with Euro 7, brake wear particles — including micro-plastics from rubber hose abrasion — are now directly regulated.
A future-proof hose needs two things: an abrasion-resistant outer cover and a low-friction inner tube.
The outer cover — it's the first thing that takes the hit from heat, road grime, ozone, and constant flexing, and honestly, it's the only thing standing between your hose and the road — needs to be abrasion-resistant. A weak outer cover cracks and flakes. Those flakes are micro-plastic emissions. Euro 7 counts every single one.
That's why we've invested heavily in high-wear outer cover compounds. Materials that stay intact longer. That resists abrasion at a molecular level.
The inner tube is just as critical. A rough inner surface creates friction. Friction creates heat. Heat accelerates hose degradation. Degradation means expansion instability. And expansion instability kills brake feel and increases dust.
